Abstract Description
Institution: University of the Sunshine Coast - QLD, Australia
The rise of aliteracy, children’s crowded leisure time, and the complex lives of parents, all impact on promoting reading for pleasure. Parents in regional south-east Queensland shared their approach to promoting reading for pleasure with their children, to support others. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology was applied. Participants’ voices provided connections for other parents and teachers to promote a passion for reading, revealing support for parents to encourage a passion for reading must be offered in sympathetic and sustainable ways. The principles of adult learning and acknowledging parents’ unique funds of knowledge provide the spark igniting a new approach.
